Prevent Resolution Failure

Happy New year! Have you made your resolutions yet? How are you doing at keeping them? I know, it is only 2 weeks into the year, but you would be amazed as to how many people have already ‘fallen off the wagon’ from the resolutions they made a mere 14 days ago.

According to a study conducted by Online Research Corp. of Princeton, NJ, only 8% of people see their resolutions to the end. 8%! In the work that I have done with my Getting Results Coaching clients, I have learned what gets in the way of people sticking with a plan that they know will help them grow their business, lose weight or even learn a new language. Many people have good intentions at the start of a new year. The year is fresh and it signals a new beginning. But, there is one major element missing from these well-intended individuals – accountability. Many people make resolutions (goals), some people communicate it to other people, but very few actually set up a structure that they can’t fail with.

Why would humans do this to themselves? We want to be in great shape, we want to make a lot of money and we want to learn new skills – we want to, we really do. So why can’t we stick to our commitments? The answer is because we are impulsive creatures – we want to do what we want, when we want and how we want. We don’t like others telling us what to do or even reminding us of what we committed to do ourselves. We find ways of getting out of commitments. For example, consider one of your goals is to expand your social network. You are walking your dog down the street when a neighbor stops you and invites you to a party at his house this weekend. What might your choice of responses be?

I’d love to, but I need to check with my wife.

Or

Let me get back to you, I just want to make sure I don’t have anything going that day. (even knowing full-well that you don’t)

Or

Sounds great, I’ll let you know when I find out if I can get a sitter for my dog!

Why would you do this? To give yourself an out, an opportunity to succumb to your whims just in case you don’t really feel like going out the night of the party. Funny thing, this is exactly why you chose ‘expanding your social network’ to begin with.

When we are truly want to change something in our world by creating a new habit or lifestyle, it takes 3 things:

  1. A commitment to doing what is necessary to accomplish your goal.
  2. Someone to hold you accountable to doing what is necessary.
  3. Putting something at stake if you don’t accomplish it.

I can feel you cringe upon reading those last two elements. That feeling speaks volumes and the resistance to them is exactly what will dump you back into the 92% part of the population that does not see those resolutions through.

If you nodded in agreement with the first element, committed to your goal, then we will help you with the other two. It is part of what we have been doing for the past decade. Amazing things are possible when you have a partner to hold you accountable to what you say you are committed to. Here are a few examples of what Getting Results Coaching Participants have accomplished – and you can too:

- Lose 140 pounds!

- Double, Triple or even Quadruple your income!

- Quit smoking for good – 10 years and going strong!

- Bought the business they had always dreamt of owning!

- Became debt free!

These are just a few examples of what true accountability can create. Ask yourself again, are you truly committed to finally losing weight and becoming healthy, to quiting smoking, or to becoming debt free? If you are excited about the result a the end of 2009 and the pride of accomplishment you feel by December, then I implore you to make the follow through of this year’s resolution a success by registering for the Getting Results Accountability Program. http://www.gettingresultscoaching.com/newprogram/
